How to Choose a Riser Desk: 5 Key Factors
1. Adjustment Mechanism
Spring-loaded scissor lifts (like the FlexiSpot M2B and VariDesk Pro Plus) are the smoothest and most reliable. Manual X-lift converters are cheaper but require more effort to adjust. Electric converters offer one-touch convenience at a higher price.
2. Height Range
Make sure the maximum height puts your monitor at eye level when standing. As a rule of thumb: for users 5'8"–6'0", you need a lift height of 14–17 inches above your desk surface. Measure your current desk height and add the required lift before buying.
3. Keyboard Tray
A separate, lowered keyboard tray is essential for proper ergonomics. Without one, your keyboard sits at monitor height — which is too high for your elbows and causes shoulder and wrist strain.
4. Weight Capacity
If you use dual monitors, check the weight capacity carefully. Budget risers often max out at 15–20 lbs. Most dual-monitor setups weigh 20–35 lbs. Look for a capacity of at least 35 lbs if you run two screens.
5. Footprint
Measure your desk before buying. Many 36" wide risers leave only 6–8" of space on each side — fine for a 60" desk, cramped on a 48" desk. If desk space is limited, consider a smaller 28"–32" wide converter.
